Opening Methods Compared

Not every safe requires force. We always choose the gentlest method that fits the problem — and discuss the approach with you before we begin.

MethodDescriptionPrice rangeSafe reusable?

Emergency power / battery swapExternal power via emergency port€149–199✓ Yes, fully

Our goal is always the first row of this table: a non-destructive opening that leaves your safe immediately usable. Only when that proves impossible do we move to the next level — and you decide in advance whether to proceed.

Tip: Note down your safe's brand and model number before calling. This lets us estimate the most likely method and price range over the phone.

4 Typical Scenarios — and How We Solve Them

Forgotten or unknown code

The most common case — especially for safes that haven't been used in a long time, or after the owner's death. We first attempt non-destructive manipulation or a code reset through the manufacturer's service channel. Price range: €149–299.

Dead battery / electronic failure

The display stays dark, the keypad doesn't respond. Many electronic safes have an emergency port for an external 9V power supply. Often solved in 15 minutes — from €149. For failed electronics, we replace the circuit board or entire lock unit.

Inheritance — deceased owner's safe

The deceased never shared the code. We open estate safes upon presentation of a certificate of inheritance or notarial probate order. Discreet handling, with the notary present on request. More details in the section below.

Mechanical defect / jammed bolt

The key won't turn, the lock sticks, the bolt is jammed. Common with older freestanding safes or after prolonged non-use. Depending on severity: manipulation or controlled drilling — €199–499.

Which Safes Do We Open?

Virtually all types. From small hotel safes to walk-in vault rooms:

  • Furniture safes — the most common home safes
  • Wall safes — built into masonry
  • Freestanding safes — heavy-duty standalone units
  • Hotel safes — in coordination with hotel management
  • Gun safes — with proof of authorisation (see notice below)
  • Document and data safes — including fire-rated and media-protected models
  • Antique money chests — historical pieces with combination locks
  • Vault rooms — walk-in installations, former bank vaults

Brands: Burg-Wächter, Hartmann, Chubb, Fichet, Format, Mueller Safe, SentrySafe, Yale, and many more. We also handle safes from unknown or unbranded manufacturers.

Authorisation and Documentation

We open safes only for verified, authorised persons. This process protects you and is required by Austrian law.

What we verify before every safe opening

These standards apply to every job — no exceptions:

GISA-registered trade business

Trade licence no. 38955860 — verifiable at any time on gisa.gv.at. You work with a government-registered locksmith.

Identity and ownership verification

Photo ID and proof of ownership (purchase receipt, lease agreement, commercial register extract) are checked and documented before work begins.

Non-destructive method as priority

We always start with the gentlest method. Only if it fails do we propose the next level — always with your explicit consent.

Discreet handling

No branded company vehicle, no unnecessary attention. Discretion is standard, especially for estate and corporate safe openings.

Transparent pricing before work starts

You receive the price after on-site analysis — before work begins. No hidden costs, itemised invoice. Our price list is publicly available.

Estate Safe Opening — What Documents You Need

Inheritance: opening a deceased person's safe

When a relative passes away and the safe code is unknown, you need the following documents for us to proceed:

  • Certificate of inheritance (Einantwortungsurkunde from the district court) or probate grant
  • Valid photo ID of the authorised heir
  • For multiple heirs: notarised power of attorney or joint instruction
  • If probate proceedings are still ongoing: order from the court commissioner (Gerichtskommissär / notary)

We document the authorisation in writing and cooperate with your notary on request. The opening can also take place in the presence of the court commissioner. Call 01 997 71 90 — we'll advise you on the process.

Gun safe / gun cabinet: Opening a gun safe requires presentation of a valid firearm ownership permit (Waffenbesitzkarte) under § 23 of the Austrian Weapons Act. Without this document, we are legally unable to proceed.

What If the Safe Cannot Be Repaired?

You have two options:

  1. Install a new lock — if only the lock is defective but the safe body is intact
  2. Purchase a new safe — we advise on suitable models and install on request

We work with the brands listed above and can supply replacement locks as well as new safes. For a lock replacement on your safe, we program the new code directly on site.

Frequently asked questions

In most cases, yes. We always prioritise non-destructive methods like manipulation or emergency power. If drilling is required, only the lock is replaced — the safe body remains usable. Only cutting (last resort for very old or damaged safes) renders the safe unusable.

Costs start at €149 for simple safes (e.g. battery swap or manipulation). Electronic defects run €199–349, high-security safes €349–699. Vault rooms on request. You receive the exact price after on-site analysis — before any work begins.

Yes, but only in coordination with hotel management. As a hotel guest, please contact reception first. We work with multiple Vienna hotels and come directly to the property when needed.

It varies considerably: a battery swap takes about 15 minutes, manipulation 30–60 minutes, and controlled drilling of high-security safes can take several hours. We provide a time estimate after on-site analysis.

Yes. Austrian law requires us to verify your firearm ownership permit (Waffenbesitzkarte) before we begin. Please have this document ready.

The most common cause is dead batteries. Other possibilities include electronic failure, an accidentally changed code, or a mechanical blockage. We check the simplest causes first — often emergency power via the external battery port resolves it.

You need a certificate of inheritance (Einantwortungsurkunde) or equivalent probate document, plus a valid photo ID. If there are multiple heirs, an authorised representative with a notarised mandate is sufficient. We document the authorisation in writing.

Yes. For non-destructively opened safes, we program a new code on the spot. For drilled safes, we install a new lock and set it up for you.
