Resistance classes compared: RC2, RC3 and RC4

The European standard EN 1627 defines how long a security door must withstand defined break-in tools. Three classes are relevant for Vienna apartments and commercial properties — the right choice depends on location, use and protection requirements.

Most Vienna apartments achieve solid protection with RC2. For ground-floor units, houses or commercial premises we recommend RC3 — these locations carry the highest burglary risk. RC4 suits properties with special requirements such as jewellery shops or villas.

Not sure which class? Call 01 997 71 90 — we advise you free of charge and recommend the resistance class that fits your situation. No sales pitch, just expert assessment.

Which security level do you need?

Assess the property location

Ground floor, basement or street-level access? The break-in risk is elevated — RC2 minimum, RC3 recommended. From the first floor upwards, RC2 is usually sufficient.

Evaluate the use

Private apartment or commercial property? For offices handling sensitive data, medical practices or retail spaces, RC3 is the recommended minimum.

Consider valuables

Jewellery, art, cash or IT infrastructure? The higher the value, the higher the sensible protection class. Above certain thresholds, insurers may require RC3 or RC4.

Assess the surroundings

Quiet residential area or busy location? In high-traffic areas, visibility acts as a deterrent — RC2 often suffices. In secluded locations, intruders have more time.

How to identify a genuine security door

Not every door marketed as "secure" is standard-tested. Check these features before buying — or let us inspect what you already have.

Checklist: Identifying a certified security door

These five points distinguish a certified security door from an ordinary door with a marketing premium:

Type plate with RC class present

Every tested security door carries a plate showing the resistance class (RC2, RC3 or RC4) and reference to EN 1627. If this plate is missing, the door is not standard-tested.

Test certificate from a recognized body

A certificate from IFT Rosenheim, Holzforschung Austria or a comparable body confirms the testing. Ask to see this document — reputable manufacturers always supply it.

Installation by a GISA-registered trade business

The best door is worthless if installed incorrectly. Ensure the installer holds a valid trade licence. Our GISA number: 38955860 — verifiable at gisa.gv.at.

Frame and door leaf form a matched unit

In a genuine security door, frame and door leaf are designed as one system. If only the leaf is replaced and the old frame kept, the entire RC rating is void.

Security cylinder with key card

The cylinder must match the RC class. Security cylinders with a key card prevent unauthorized key copying — essential for any security door from RC2 upwards.

Insurance premium discount for certified doors

Premium savings: 5–15% with many insurers

Many Austrian household insurers offer a premium reduction when a standard-tested security door (RC2 or higher) is documented. Savings typically range from 5–15% of the annual premium. After installation we provide all paperwork: test certificate, installation confirmation and manufacturer documentation. Ask your insurer about the conditions — in many cases the door pays for itself through premium savings alone.

Frequently asked questions

Emergency opening of a security door starts at €99 during daytime hours (06:00–17:00). An evening surcharge of €49 applies from 17:00–22:00, and a night or weekend surcharge of €59 applies outside those hours. You receive the exact fixed price on the phone before we dispatch.

RC (Resistance Class) per EN 1627 indicates how long a door withstands tested break-in tools. RC2 resists simple tools for at least 3 minutes — suitable for apartments. RC3 withstands heavy tools like crowbars for at least 5 minutes — recommended for ground floors and commercial use. RC4 resists power tools for 10 minutes — for high-security sites.

Depending on door type and structural conditions, installation takes half a day to a full working day. If the frame also needs replacing, it may take slightly longer. We provide a precise time estimate during the free initial consultation.

RC2 doors start at approximately €1,500 including installation. Quality RC3 doors range from €2,500 to €4,000. RC4 solutions for commercial use cost more. The free consultation always ends with a transparent quote — no surprises.

We work independently with established brands: KÖMMERLING, Internorm, GROKE, PIRNAR, HÖRMANN and WERU. We recommend the door that best matches your security requirements and budget — not the highest-margin product.

Yes. Many Austrian household insurers offer premium reductions of 5–15% when a certified security door (RC2 or higher) is verified. We supply all certificates and test reports your insurer requires after installation.

In some cases yes, but often no. A security door requires an equally resistant frame. During the initial consultation we assess whether the existing frame is sufficient or whether a complete replacement is needed.

A tested security door has a type plate showing the RC class and reference to EN 1627, plus a certificate from a recognized testing institute (e.g. IFT Rosenheim or Holzforschung Austria). If these documents are missing, it is not a standard-tested security door.
